Steamboat vs. Paddle Wheeler

When people think of the Creole Queen many assume that it is a traditional steamboat, but in reality it is in fact a paddle wheeler. So what is the difference?

Steamboat

By definition any boat that is powered by steam is considered a steamboat. A steamboat is propelled by the steam generated from the engine. A steamboat can have its paddlewheels on its side or at the back.

Paddle Wheeler

The creole queen is a paddle wheeler. A paddle wheeler is a type of steamboat that uses large paddlewheels mounted on its side to propel the vessel forward through the water. On a paddle wheeler it has paddlewheels on each side of the vessel, which are turned by the engine to create forward motion.
